Understanding exam and visa requirements for international applicants

International students need to meet exam and visa requirements for admission eligibility to UC Davis.

English proficiency exam requirements

Success at UC Davis depends on a strong understanding of the English language. If you studied in the United States for fewer than three years and learned in a language other than English before you arrived, you must demonstrate English proficiency. Fulfill this requirement through AP exams, IB exams or transferable college coursework. This also satisfies the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement, or ELWR.

Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL

International English Language Testing System, or IELTS

Duolingo English test

Visa requirements

As an international student, you need a passport and temporary visa as well as the appropriate forms and documentation in order to attend school in the United States. All international students must obtain a valid passport and F-1 or J-1 visa. The process to apply for a visa for the United States can be confusing. It is very important you follow the necessary steps to obtain the correct status to enter the country. The UC Davis Services for International Students and Scholars, or SISS, office is available to assist you with visa and immigration issues.

SISS also provides support with financial, personal and academic issues. SISS hosts an orientation at the beginning of the school year to help international students acquaint themselves with regulations to maintainin their visa status, information on work options with an F-1 or J-1 visa and other academic resources. SISS also provides valuable tips on life as a UC Davis international student.
